The brief was a magazine article. We scripted, produced, filmed and edited five short films that let each person tell it in their own voice, and end by asking the viewer the same question.

The brief

We started from a page in a magazine

Each film began as a full-page print ad: one portrait, one headline word and roughly a hundred words of copy. The ads show what each person does. The films add what it took to get there.

Determination print ad: Andre on a road bike at sunrise, in a PossAbilities jersey and a green-and-yellow prosthetic cover, under the crimson word DETERMINATION and LIVE IT.
Determination
Inspire print ad: Dilys smiling, wearing a light-blue race shirt and several race medals, beside the blue word INSPIRE and LIVE IT.
Inspire
Balance print ad: Miyuki in a tai chi pose on a garden lawn, beneath the red word BALANCE and LIVE IT.
Balance
Active print ad: two hikers with backpacks on green hills, beneath the orange word ACTIVE and LIVE IT.
Active
Courage print ad: a boy with his prosthetic leg resting on a basketball, beneath the hand-lettered word courage and LIVE IT.
Courage

The five print ads, before the films.

FilmThe ad showsThe film adds
DeterminationAndré on a road bike at sunrise, in a PossAbilities jersey and a green-and-yellow prosthetic cover. The copy is about teammates and a 2016 Paralympic goal. The swim and the run around the ride, so it becomes a full triathlon day. Then André's own account of the accident in 2011.Left on the page The Paralympic goal, though the swim was shot in the pool where he was training for it.
InspireDilys smiling in a race shirt, with race medals around her neck. The copy is about encouragement and counseling.Dilys as chaplain, listening, and Dilys on a morning run. And the story the ad never mentions: her heart nearly stopping in 2010 and the pacemaker that followed.
BalanceMiyuki in a tai chi pose on a garden lawn. The copy is about helping patients and coworkers find inner balance. Her day: roses, tea, the hospital corridor and the rehab gym. And the question she turns on herself: how can she help others find balance if she is out of balance?
ActiveTwo hikers on green hills. The copy is about health policy, community outreach and volunteering at his church's after-school program. The choice behind the lifestyle: years of routine, then a change that led to marathons and triathlons. Mountain-bike rides, meals, and time outdoors as a reset.Left on the page The outreach work and the after-school program.
CourageAdrian with his prosthetic leg on a basketball. The copy says he lost his leg in an accident and got back to shooting hoops.Adrian's own words about being afraid to fall. Soccer as well as basketball, the bedroom with the crutches, and a family on a desert overlook.Left on the page The statistic and the Vision 2020 pitch.
The scripts

Every film has the same four beats

The five people, sports and settings are all different. The scripts are built the same way, so a viewer who watches one knows how to watch the next. Here are the four beats, as they play in Determination.

The narrator asks

Buried deep within us lies a dream.

A universal opening. Nothing about the subject yet.

The subject admits the cost

There are days when I don't want to train.

The subject takes over in first person and gets specific.

The turning point

I could have lost my life, but I only lost my leg.

One event, often dated, that changed how they live.

The refrain

This is your life. How do you live it?

The last two lines of every film in the series.

Quoted from the Determination script.

FilmThe narrator opens withThe subject's turning pointWhat the film argues
DeterminationA dream buried in all of us, and the discipline it takes to reach it.An accident in 2011 that cost André his leg, not his life. Every day since is a second chance.Giving up would be easier. The journey, not the finish, defines us.
Inspire"When we look back at our lives, what will we see?"Dilys's heart nearly stopped in 2010. A pacemaker gave her a renewed purpose.Committing to ourselves overflows into inspiring others. When you love what you do, it shows.
BalanceEvery day is an opportunity to pursue balance.A physical therapist asks how she can help patients find balance if she is out of balance herself.Recovery starts with balance, and balance starts with caring for ourselves. It is different for each person.
Active"How often are we truly tested?"After years of the same routine, Andrejs chose to eat healthier and live actively. Marathons and triathlons followed.Being active is a daily choice. Outdoors, it becomes a reset, a time for prayer, and a source of peace.
CourageSometimes even the smallest step can take a huge amount of courage. After his accident in 2013, Adrian got a prosthetic leg. He knew he could run but didn't want to fall.Fear can't decide how you live. Confidence grows with each step. Adrian will be ready when the chance comes.
The films

Five people, in their own words

Title slate for Determination | Live It: a runner with a prosthetic leg on a coastal path at dusk, with the crimson Loma Linda University Health card at lower right.
Title slate

Determination

André: triathlete, teammate, Olympic hopeful

"I could have lost my life, but I only lost my leg."André, in the film

What the film says

The film moves from the dream to the work to the cost. André talks about the mornings he doesn't want to train and why quitting is no longer an option. Then he tells the story of his accident. He closes by saying the best way to thank the people who helped him is to live well and train hard.

In the frame

A full day of training. He gets ready at home, then rides a PossAbilities bike with a green-and-yellow prosthetic. He swims laps in the Los Baños del Mar Pool in Santa Barbara, where he was training for the 2016 Paralympics, which we rented in full for the shoot. He changes legs at the back of his car by the pier, and finishes with a beach run into dusk under a low moon.

Title slate for Inspire | Live It: a woman in a teal shirt, hands on hips, looking out over a valley, with the navy Loma Linda University Health card at lower left.
Title slate

Inspire

Dilys: runner, cheerleader, chaplain

"Now, with a pacemaker, I live life with a renewed purpose: to care for others, to care for my body, and to care for my soul."Dilys, in the film

What the film says

The film asks what we will see when we look back on our lives. Dilys answers in steps: the joy of encouraging others, the commitment to yourself that comes first, and the moment in 2010 when her heart nearly stopped. It ends on inspiration as something that arrives in an instant and asks what our lives say to the people around us.

In the frame

It opens on a runner far down a path, with her name and roles on screen. Then a close-up of a running shoe, a morning run, and Dilys at her desk as a chaplain, listening to two people. It cuts between that and her running through neighborhoods and up into the hills. A close, smiling portrait at a beach at sunset leads into a long overlook and the title.

Title slate for Balance | Live It: four people standing on a lawn with arms outstretched in a tai chi pose, with the red Loma Linda University Health card at lower left.
Title slate

Balance

Miyuki: meditation expert, tai chi enthusiast, physical therapist

"How can I help someone find their balance when I, myself, am out of balance?"The physical therapist, in the film

What the film says

This is the most inward of the five. The narrator calls balance simple to say and hard to achieve. Miyuki then describes her work: each patient presents a different challenge, but balance is where they begin, and belief in themselves is where recovery starts. Then she turns the question on herself. Taking care of her own needs makes her a better therapist and a better person.

In the frame

It opens on a red rose in a garden and moves through Miyuki's day: pruning roses, pouring tea at her table, walking a hospital corridor with her badge on. Then it goes to work. She smiles at a front desk and stands in a rehab gym among the parallel bars and the therapists. A close-up of a hand gripping a rail leads to a warm moment with a patient. The tai chi group gathers on the lawn late in the film and finishes with arms raised, then the slate.

Title slate for Active | Live It: a man and a woman with backpacks on a golden hillside at sunset, with the orange Loma Linda University Health card at lower left.
Title slate

Active

Andrejs: outdoor enthusiast, volunteer, graduate student

"Staying active is a choice that I make each day."Andrejs, in the film

What the film says

The narrator opens with a test: how often do we get to push our bodies and wills to the limit? Andrejs answers with an ordinary change. After years of the same routine, he chose to eat better and be active, and that choice took him to marathons and triathlons around the world. Outdoors, he finds a place to be alone with his thoughts, pray and reset. The film calls activity a sacrifice whose returns are greater than any money can buy.

In the frame

It begins at dusk over a valley of city lights, then follows Andrejs on a mountain bike along ridge trails at golden hour. Between rides come the daily choices the script talks about: a smoothie in the blender, a plate of sliced fruit and crackers. There is also a cut to the working side of his life: a shirt and tie, a binder in hand, an empty office. It ends on a slow hike with a companion across the hills at sunset, then the slate.

Title slate for Courage | Live It: a boy with a prosthetic leg and two adults on a desert overlook, with the gold Loma Linda University Children's Hospital card at lower left.

Courage

Adrian: student, friend, sports enthusiast

"I knew deep down that I could run, but I just didn't want to fall down."Adrian, in the film

What the film says

Adrian's story is told in two voices. The narrator names him, "No one knows this better than Adrian," and Adrian answers in first person about the day everything changed with his prosthetic leg. The film follows his confidence as it grows step by step. It ends on the chances ahead: goals, game-winning shots, mountains to climb.

In the frame

Adrian is on a soccer field, dribbling with a group of friends. Then the film cuts to the quiet before that: Adrian sitting on his bed with crutches against the wall and trophies on a shelf, then getting his prosthetic leg on. The film returns to the field and moves to a basketball court, with close-ups of his feet on the ball and a raised-arms shot. At dusk he stands on a desert overlook with his family, then the slate.

The look

One word, one person, one color

  • The wordA single value in the film's color: Determination, Inspire, Balance, Active, Courage.
  • The refrainLIVE IT, in white, under every word. It echoes the question the narrator asks at the end.
  • The cardThe Loma Linda crest on a card in the film's color, so the brand takes on each story's color and the story never takes on the brand's.
  • The lineEvery description closes with the system's promise: Many Strengths. One Mission.

How we made it

We did every stage ourselves

Scripted

We turned each article into a narrator-and-subject script built on the same four beats, so five different lives read as one series.

Produced

We handled location permitting, and for Determination's swim sequence we rented out the entire Los Baños del Mar Pool in Santa Barbara, a historic, 50-meter beachside pool, where André was training for the 2016 Paralympics. Every end card thanks the people and places that opened their doors, from the City and County of Santa Barbara and the City of Newport Beach to Crafton Hills Open Space Conservancy, Palm Desert Charter Middle School and Loma Linda University Medical Center | East Campus.

Filmed

Each subject was filmed where they actually do the thing they do: a lap pool and a coastal road, a chaplain's desk, a rehab gym, a home kitchen, school playing fields and ridge trails.

Edited

Each film gives the picture and music room before the first word, then lets the narration and the subject's voice carry the middle.
